Information about the state of the environment is of great importance in solving problems assessment and regulation of environmental quality and the development of a strategy for environmental activities. To obtain such information was a reliable information system, called the MONITORING.

In the monitoring system was created the network of background monitoring stations located in biosphere reserves. Background monitoring means the observation of phenomena and processes occurring in the environment, not exposed to economic activity. The importance of background monitoring, is that possible negeletive changes in the environment will manifest themselves much earlier than in industrial areas.

On the territory of the Republic of Belarus of 23 November 1978 was created the only background monitoring station, which is located in the Berezinsky biosphere reserve.

Station background monitoring are focused on obtaining information about the state of the natural environment on the territory of the reserve.

The station consists of:

  • a stationary hydro-meteorological and solar radiation observations;
  • fixed item  sampling  of atmospheric air and atmospheric precipitation for subsequent chemical. analysis  to determine the content of pollutants;
  • item  continuous monitoring  pollution  air.
  • monitoring of pollution of snow cover;
  • point radiation monitoring;
  • chemical laboratory for initial processing and analysis of select samples to determine the content of pollutants.

The objectives of the station  is to ensure the functioning of the system of background monitoring at the regional level in the framework of the National system of environmental monitoring.

The work program of the station, fworships in two areas:
monitoring background levels of pollutants in the environmental objects;
and climate monitoring at meteorological and actinometric parameters.

Among the objects of the environment monitoring includes atmospheric air, atmospheric precipitation and snow cover.

High priority  contaminants  atmospheric  air  substances, changerepresented  in  reserve  included:  sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, particulate matter, heavy metals and volatile organic compounds.

In samples of atmospheric precipitation are defined: the basic salt composition, heavy metals, and acidity.

For the purposes of climate monitoring and for interpretation of data on concentrationtrapapers of pollutants in the environment, the station regular  monitor the set of meteorological variables and physical characteristics of the environment. Measurement of complex parameters is  a clock on the Program reference climatic weather stations, designed to explore long-term climate change.
